Casa Kalliroi - 19th Century Manor House - Syros
Casa Kalliroi is a beautiful, terracotta coloured, majestic and luxurious 6 bedroom, 19th Century Mansion House which sits among superb courtyards and gardens in the exclusive area of Poseidonia on the Greek island of Syros. Although the villa has been carefully renovated to retain much of its glory, it is very much “21st Century” with an excellent sound system, (which is boosted throughout the house and gardens), air con, high speed wifi and cable T.V.
You are greeted by the spacious entrance hall with original hand painted floor tiles and sweeping staircase. An archway leads to the drawing and dining rooms where shuttered windows keep the house cool in summer and flood the house with light during the spring and autumn. Large squashy sofas, hand crafted Italian furniture and a dining table which opens to seat 14 completes the charm. Across the hall is the Music Room with an original barrel organ and antique piano. Bedroom 1 is on this floor with king size bed and en-suite bathroom. This delightful room has a private patio and separate entrance via the courtyard.
The exceptional kitchen with snazzy tiles and super modern units has all that you would expect from a house of this standard – every possible convenience has been catered for. Hand painted French windows lead onto the hub of Casa Kalliroi – a huge, enchanting courtyard with vines, potted plants, hand painted murals and a period dining table which has been lovingly restored with antique Italian tiles. Decorative French “fer forge” vintage chairs add to the charisma. This is where you will have breakfast….and lunch….and evening drinks….and dinner. It will be impossible to tear yourself away from its magic to enjoy the endearing qualities of this glorious island.
The staircase leads to the landing - there is a stair lift for those guests who may be a little unsteady on their feet. Light floods through the picture windows – 4m high ceilings, beautiful chests of drawers and linen cupboards full of crisp white bedding which compliment the mahogany furniture. Family photos give you a glimpse into times gone by. No fighting over the views as each bedroom has them. Bedroom 2 has a king size bed and French windows leading onto the terrace with views across the gardens towards the village and beyond. The blue painted Church stands proud in the morning sun. Bedroom 3 has large twin beds, delightful antique kilims and painted shutters. Bedroom 4 with twin beds has high wooden ceilings, a lovely dresser with marble top, an old hat stand and shuttered windows. Bedroom 5 is enchanting and was traditionally the children’s room with twin beds, pretty iron work white headboards and pale wooden furniture. Bedroom 6 with twins that zip together to make a super-king has a lovely antique dresser.
This is a home where fabrics are fresh and colours serene and where every piece of furniture or art work has been chosen with care to compliment the house, rather than crowd it.
To the front of the house is a delightful veranda with breathtaking views across the village to the surrounding hills. Settees, bistro style garden furniture, two round dining tables, pistachio trees and fresh herbs contribute to its style and comfort. This is the perfect spot to enjoy dinner or have a game of cards whilst being intoxicated by the glorious sunset.
The whole of the villa is walled and gated which adds to its privacy.
